'Friend' is a beautiful composition, simple as that. The gentle strum of guitar strings, gradually increasing beat and a crescendo that makes you hair stand on end all cast a spell over you like that in Cinderella, you never want the clock to strike 12 but when it does you feel a faint glow from having had such an amazing experiance. The lyrics hold a certain mystic and, as a prominent lover of literature, I have fallen for a few lines: "Sing a shallow lullaby and hide your lying eyes", "It's no pathetic fallacy from a weekend-poet's book", "We'll share a sky but not a life and live out separate lives / A book that's broken at the spine.".
Keep up with Winter 1982:
